About KTPs

A Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a three-way partnership between your organisation, a graduate and Cardiff University. Part-funded by the government, the scheme provides access to academic skills and expertise to businesses who wish to innovate, expand or improve their performance.

The partnership involves one or more qualified persons (Associates) to facilitate this transfer of skills and expertise. They work within your organisation on a project central to your needs and are jointly supervised by company personnel and a senior academic.

A KTP is part-funded by a grant. You will need to contribute to the salary of the Associate who will work with your business, plus the cost of a supervisor who will oversee the scheme.

The amount you will need to contribute depends on the scale and length of the project. It will also depend on the size of your company. Typically:

  • small and medium-sized enterprises contribute around £35,000 per year, about one-third of the project costs
  • large businesses contribute around £55,000 per year, or half of the project costs.

Eligibility

The scheme is open to private and third sector organisations and the company:

  • ?Must have at least four employees
  • Been running for at least two years
  • KTP proposals from large companies (over 250 employees) should seek to facilitate the involvement of SMEs within their supply chain

You will need to supply the last two year's audited accounts and latest period management accounts to facilitate assessment of liquidity and profitability to confirm that the company can 'afford' the cost of the KTP.
