Strategic research alliances
Developing alliances with other academic organisations, industry and government is essential for us to realise our research ambitions.
These alliances allow us to combine complementary expertise, increase our research capacity and help us to turn original thought into real world impact. They also provide exciting cross-organisational opportunities and alternative funding streams for academics.
We are part of the Russell Group, which represents the 24 leading research-intensive universities in the UK.
In 2012/13, Russell Group universities accounted for 74% (over ￡3.5 billion) of UK universities' research grant and contract income and 75% (over ￡1.1 billion) of total income from the UK Research Councils.
We are a member of GW4, which brings together the South West and Wales' four leading, research-intensive universities.
With a combined turnover of more than ￡1 billion, GW4 has a research power of significant scale.
We have close links with the Welsh Government. This includes being part of the Sêr Cymru programme in which we lead the Life Sciences Research Network Wales.
The network aims to develop science leading to new treatments in areas of unmet medical need. We are also involved in activities related to the new EC funded Convergence programme.
We work closely with Universities Wales (Unis Wales) which represents the interests of universities in Wales, and is a National Council of Universities UK.
The Academia Europaea Knowledge Hub based at Cardiff University is one of four hosted across Europe.
The Hub aims to signpost academic excellence across the UK and Republic of Ireland and encourage collaboration across the Academy. It will also play a major role in the provision of scientific evidence for policy-making in Europe.
